waves of progress

This week has been truly incredible for the following reasons:
1. Finished the North St. Mural and had a wonderful celebration on a sunny day.

See more photos here.

2. Our country voted for progress.

3. I was awarded a Clowes Fellowship to do a 4-week residency at Vermont Studio Center in September of 2013.   Every year they award one each for visual artists living in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Indiana and Washington.  What a gigantic honor! I can’t believe I’m going to have a whole month to do nothing but live and breathe my studio practice in a beautiful place surrounded by other artists.  I can’t even begin to speculate what will come out of that experience.

I am ready to be propelled forward into a this new phase of my life without looking back!

series of squares

I recently discovered how cheap it is to get masonite custom-cut at a particular evil home improvement box store, so I got a bunch of 1×1 squares cut and have been working on a series of quick (ish) landscapes.

||||| the north street soundwave project |||||

Some of you reading this may know that since August I have been engaged in painting a GIGANTIC mural on North Street in Northampton with some of my fellow artists from C3, a Northampton-based Creative Community Collective that I’ve been a part of for 3 years.  For personal sanity, time management and other life reasons, I have decided to end my work with C3 after the completion of the mural.  In my time with C3 I have met and worked with some incredible, inspiring and creative people and helped keep the flame of thoughtful multi-disciplinary creativity alive in this town.  I can’t imagine a better way to go out with a bang than this project.

The crew: Carolyn Clayton, Darya Diamond, Perry Huntoon (me), and Dana Wilde.

Earlier this year, C3 was approached by Ward 3 City Councilor Owen Freeman-Daniels with a proposal that we paint a mural on the wall under the porn shop(a new and controversial addition to the neighborhood) on the short stretch of North Street that connects King Street to Market Street.  Darya Diamond, a Hampshire College student and our intern at the time, eagerly decided to take the reins as our Project Leader, with myself, Dana Wilde, and Carolyn Clayton as her crew.  Most of us had been a part of C3 together for a while before that, but had never had the chance to work collaboratively on a project that engaged each of our visual art skills.

Painting exhaustion is the best kind.

Boy oh boy am I tired! I just painted a whole painting in 3 days. I LOVE the pressure of a deadline, it brings out my best work(but I can’t always do it alone! Big thanks to my wonderful friend Caleb Castle for the last-minute critique!) Check out this bad girl:

If you live nearby, you can see this painting alongside some other great landscape work at the Oxbow Gallery, 275 Pleasant St., Northampton MA in this upcoming show:

Hope to see lots of y’all there!

NEWS.

Just when I think I’m heading for some downtime, more and more opportunities are presenting themselves!  It’s an exciting time!  Next month, I will be humbly participating in the Oxbow Gallery‘s Plein Air + show to benefit the Dakin Animal Shelter(August 2-September 2, opening on August 10 for Arts Night Out!).  The show will feature all kinds of varieties of landscape art and will consist of impressive Pioneer Valley artists including some of my former professors.  Such an honor!  I still have no idea what I am submitting, so you will have to attend the show to find out.

This morning I went online for the first time since the weekend (was helping my mom move out of her NH house to move to the Bay Area!), and discovered that some of my drawings had been chosen by some crazy cool Etsy-ers for their treasury lists.  Click the screenshots below to view them!

To top it all off, I may or may not have a group show in the works OVERSEAS with some wonderful talented friends from my past.  But I’ll keep that under wraps for now….
